Dear friend of ESF,

Chuck Mays, Anna Bennett and Ĵenja and Joel Amis were all at the World Esperanto Congress in Lahti, Finland (along, of course, with Mark Fettes), where we lost no opportunity to bring the work of ESF to the attention of congress participants. We had our own table at the organizations fair on the opening evening of the congress, we received prominent attention in the annual meeting of the Center for Research and Documentation on World Language Problems (CED), and we had our own public meeting, in which we talked about our research program, our conservation work, and our support for education. Attendance was good: around forty people attended the ESF meeting.

The highlight of the week was the colloquium on the final Saturday afternoon, organized by ESF on behalf of CED. We invited leaders in research and education to attend the colloquium. Around forty people accepted our invitation, and we were able to have a lively discussion on such matters as future research on Esperanto and interlinguistics, the future of university teaching on these topics, and general priorities on these issues. The colloquium began with lunch and ended with dinner, with five hours of presentations and discussion groups in between. We are now assembling the reports from the various groups and we hope soon to be able to prepare a complete report on the event.

Another prominent topic at the colloquium was the Nitobe Symposium planned for the weekend following the World Esperanto Congress in Montreal in August 2020 (namely August 9-11). Mark Fettes and Ĵenja Amis are taking the lead on this.

Special thanks are due to our Director of Research, Angela Tellier, who, even though she was not able to come to Finland herself, did most of the organizing, and to Executive Director Chuck Mays, who assisted  in numerous ways throughout the week and also made new contacts for ESF among congress participants.

Our board member Mark Fettes completed his mandate as president of the Universal Esperanto Association and was followed in that role by another ESF associate, our advisory board member Duncan Charters. We wish Duncan every success in his new and challenging role. Another friend of ESF, Orlando Raola, former president of E-USA, also joined the UEA board, with responsibility for, among other tasks, research and documentation.

Our Annual Report for 2018 is now available on the ESF website: https://www.esperantic.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Presidents-report-2018.pdf.  It describes what was a very successful fiftieth-anniversary year for ESF.  Our work continues with equal energy this year.  We are glad to have you on our team!
