Profile: Bruce Sherwood is a physicist. He was born in 1938 and grew up in West Lafayette IN. He graduated with a degree in engineering from Purdue University. Through the Fulbright program he studied physics for a year in Padova, Italy and received his doctorate in experimental particle physics at the University of Chicago. He was a professor at Caltech where as an instructor using the famous "Feynman Lectures on Physics" he became interested in physics instruction, including with the use of computers. He next taught at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (where he was both a professor of physics and a professor of linguistics), at Carnegie Mellon University, and at North Carolina State University. He retired in 2008 and now lives in Denton TX where he continues to be active in the further evolution of the 3D programming tool VPython. He is a fellow of the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He wrote with Ruth Chabay the text book "Matter and Interactions" for university students of science and engineering. He speakes Esperanto, Italian, and Spanish and reads French and Portuguese.
